7 Habits of Highly Effective Social Media Managers

You are an entrepreneur/blogger/business owner and you have finally decided that you need to outsource your social media to someone.  But how do you know who to use?  Please do not hand this off to your young niece who is always on Snapchat or that college intern that has a decent size following on Instagram.  You want to make sure that the person you are hiring for this important task is knowledgeable about the ins and outs of all the platforms available to you.

Here are 7 habits of highly effective social media managers:

1. They know their target markets

This is so important! Managing your business on social media is not just about posting funny meme’s and viral videos. If your business is a Hair Salon then posting a cute video about an elephant saving a man from drowning doesn’t make sense. Unless your target market are zoo keepers or animal activists that also like to have their highlights done every month.

In order to come up with relevant content for you audience, you need to identify who and where they are. What are their pain points? What can you provide them that will keep them coming back for more. Be as specific as you can.  This will ensure that your accounts are catering to the people that will take the actions you want them to take; like, engage, and hopefully convert.

2. They set clear and attainable goals.

Set SMART Goals when it comes to your social accounts.

Do you want to grow your accounts to increase your brand exposure?

Do you want to drive sales or leads?

Do you want to build a community of brand advocates?

You want to be as specific as possible with this. Just saying I want to get more followers on my Facebook page isn’t good enough. The better way to frame it is ‘I want to get 200 new engaged followers on my Facebook page in the next 30 days’.

Remember to start small with your goals. Unless you are forking over some cash to help grow your following you will need to be realistic. Organic growth can take time. But don’t worry! Small goals can achieve BIG results.

 3. They create and share great content with a strategy in place

Content is King but Strategy is Queen. You need both to rule this kingdom. Knowing your target market plays a crucial roll when creating content because you want to reach and engage with the people that are going to drive your business forward. The goal is to become the authority in your industry so that people come to you for their information.

A great social media manager engages in social listening. Ultimately engagement is what you want so creating the correct content for your audience is important. Making content that has specific calls to action is vital. The next step needs to be made abundantly clear to ensure that you get maximum benefit for your effort.

4. They know that different platforms = different content

Not all social media platforms are created equally. While there is some crossover in terms of audience, not every demographic is on every platform. A good social media marketer knows that you do not have to be on every single platform to be successful. In fact, it may hurt you if it is not where your target market is engaging. It is better to focus on 2-3 platforms that you can truly excel at.

Creating different content for each platform is something that also needs to be done. You can take one piece of content and re-purpose it to save time but just pushing the same content to all of your platforms is definitely not something you want to be doing.

5. They pay attention to the Insights

It is important to know which content is gaining traction with your audience and which is falling flat. Paying attention to the metrics helps you see what is and isn’t working. It allows you to see the days and times that your audience is engaging with your content and also what is resonating the most.

Watching, analyzing, and ultimately understanding your insights will help you to refine your total strategy over time and make sure you are on the right track.

6. They engage!

They don’t call it anti-social media right? Engagement is the whole point. This is the real reason social media marketing is the future. It gives you unprecedented access to your active and engaged customers in real time. You can build meaningful relationships with them. Your socials have the ability to humanize your company or brand in a way that no other marketing does. Engaging in an authentic and meaningful way will help build trust which in turn will result in more sales.

Social media experts will block out small chunks of time to go in and engage with their followers or target audiences posts by liking or commenting.

7. They utilize schedulers.

No one has time to create, curate, post and engage in an authentic way all in real time on multiple platforms everyday! (Unless you have the ability to stop time) Schedulers are the best way to handle all the posting to different platforms that needs to get done. Which also brings me back to why having a strategy is important. It’s going to be hard to create and schedule out a week or months worth of content if you don’t have some sort of strategy in place.

Great social media managers know that they need to create great content with a strategy in place and get that content to the correct audience at the right times on the right platforms and engage, engage, engage! Social media is an ever evolving beast and its important to keep up with all the algorithm changes, because they happen often, while also staying grounded and not getting caught up in shiny new toy syndrome.  There is a ton stuff to pay attention to when you are managing social media but with the right approach a social media pro can get it all done.
